She's living my life!

I have a client who is a published writer. Every time I get a call from her - I feel the need to reflect on my life and try to figure out what exactly went wrong. Why am I watching her animals and she is going to speak at a writer's conference? Why does she jet off to Canada to visit her editor and I'm scooping her cat's litter box? I know in my heart that I am a good writer, but I am getting quite a pile of rejection letters now and just don't seem to be getting anywhere. Plus, I can't figure out - if she is gone all the time...when is she writing? I can't seem to find a way to carve out even a couple of hours to get anything on paper. People tell you - that you need to be dedicated to the craft, but do these people have other jobs, families, bills to pay? How do they find the time to write and I can't even find time to do the laundry? Something went wrong somewhere - I just don't know what happened....

Set yourself an assignment to write X words per day, for some X which is a bit more than you are writing.

If you usually write about feelings, then write a description of a building you can see, with no emotion words. Do a verbal still life. Describe things you don't normally write about, like a visual artist practicing perspective, or brush strokes or figure drawing.

Write something and post it to a writer's group online and ask what is the best and worst part of the writing. Try to improve the worst and capitalize on the best. Expose yourself to the harshest criticism you can find. Cry and then try again.

Write instead of watching TV, instead of checking to see if you have cellulite on the back of your thighs yet (face it, you do, and you can write lying on your stomach while doing leg lifts). Write while waiting for the dentist. Write while waiting for the dryer. Write things in your head while you can't write on paper.

How many pieces have you submitted for publication this month? Why wasn't it more? Are you serious about this or not?

LOL, been out of circulation for a while. Just saw this! I am sending out queries at an average of three a week --- most weeks. Business has picked up and I've had to slack off because a lot of the time I'm not getting in early enough to even think about getting on the computer. BUT thanks for the advice! I really do need to make writing a daily part of the routine. Have to get through Memorial Day weekend first though!
:-O
